JAKARTA – Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General (Irjen Pol.) Asep Edi Suheri has reportedly received a promotion to a higher rank, from two-star Inspector General to three-star Commissioner General (Komjen) of the Indonesian National Police. The information surfaced publicly even though, as of Thursday (May 14, 2026), it had not yet been officially announced by the National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri).
News of the promotion first circulated through a congratulatory message posted by Metro Jaya Police Public Relations Chief Senior Commissioner (Kombes Pol.) Budi Hermanto via his personal WhatsApp account on Thursday morning. In the post, Budi Hermanto and the entire Public Relations Division of Metro Jaya Police conveyed their congratulations on Asep Edi Suheri’s promotion to the rank of three-star police general.
“THE HEAD OF PUBLIC RELATIONS OF METRO JAYA POLICE, ALONG WITH STAFF AND ALL MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS DIVISION, CONGRATULATE AND WISH SUCCESS ON THE PROMOTION TO A HIGHER RANK AS COMMISSIONER GENERAL OF POLICE ASEP EDI SUHERI, S.I.K., M.Si., CHIEF OF METRO JAYA POLICE,” the message stated.
If officially confirmed, Asep would become one of the active senior National Police officers serving as Metro Jaya Police Chief while holding the rank of Commissioner General. The promotion is widely viewed as a reflection of the trust placed in him by the National Police leadership for maintaining security stability in the capital region and surrounding areas.
Asep Edi Suheri is a high-ranking police officer and graduate of the 1994 class of the Indonesian Police Academy (Akpol). He is widely recognized for his extensive experience in criminal investigation and law enforcement. He officially assumed the position of Metro Jaya Police Chief on August 5, 2025, replacing his predecessor amid increasingly complex security dynamics in the Jakarta metropolitan area.
At the beginning of his tenure, Asep immediately faced a major challenge. At the time, members of the Metro Jaya Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) were implicated in a case involving the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver named Afan Kurniawan. The incident triggered waves of protests and demonstrations across several locations in Jakarta in late August last year.
The case attracted widespread public attention due to heightened tensions between the community and law enforcement authorities. However, despite mounting pressure, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo continued to entrust Asep with leading Metro Jaya Police.
Under his leadership, Metro Jaya Police introduced the slogan “Jaga Jakarta” (“Protect Jakarta”), symbolizing efforts to strengthen security stability, manage public order disturbances, and adopt a more responsive approach to various social issues in the capital. Several observers have assessed that Jakarta’s security situation has remained relatively stable despite intense political, economic, and social activities.
Asep’s career within the National Police has been long and steadily progressive. He served as Cirebon City Police Chief in 2011 before being appointed Sukabumi Police Chief the following year. Those field assignments became the foundation of his rise through the middle ranks of the police institution.
In 2015, Asep was appointed Deputy Chief of Bekasi City Metro Police before being promoted as Tangerang City Metro Police Chief in 2016. His performance in the criminal investigation division continued to attract attention from National Police leaders, eventually leading to strategic assignments within the Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim).
The year 2020 marked a significant turning point in his career. Asep was appointed Deputy Director for Specific Crimes at Bareskrim Polri. In the same year, he also served as Head of the Bureau for Coordination and Supervision of Civil Servant Investigators (Korwas PPNS) at Bareskrim.
His career trajectory continued upward in 2021 when he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General, earning his first star. Following that promotion, Asep was entrusted with leading the Cyber Crime Directorate of Bareskrim Polri, one of the institution’s most strategic divisions responsible for handling national cyber and digital crimes.
In 2022, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Bareskrim Polri, the second-highest position within the National Police Criminal Investigation Corps. His extensive experience in investigations, cybercrime, and law enforcement supervision established him as one of the National Police generals with a particularly strong investigative background.
Asep’s appointment as Metro Jaya Police Chief in 2025 was also viewed as part of National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo’s broader strategy to strengthen security in the nation’s capital. The jurisdiction of Metro Jaya Police is widely regarded as a national security barometer, covering government centers, business districts, and major political activities.
Now, with reports of his promotion to Commissioner General, Asep’s standing within the elite ranks of the Indonesian National Police appears to be increasingly solidified. Nevertheless, as of the publication of this report, there has been no official announcement from National Police Headquarters regarding any mutation telegram or formal promotion decree.
The public is now awaiting official confirmation from the National Police institution regarding the latest status of the Metro Jaya Police Chief. If officially promoted to Commissioner General, Asep Edi Suheri would become one of the key figures in the leadership structure of the Indonesian National Police at the national level.
